Since 1990, PEC has an observer status at the level of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as African Union.

PEC represents African employers at the tripartite AU Labour and Social Affairs Commission which meets annually in an African country.

At these meetings, one of the three Vice Chairpersons is elected from the employer group.
